Metro police merger with Saps will weaken crime fighting - Plato
Parliament is considering legislation that would bring metro police departments under Saps control.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Community safety MEC Dan Plato says absorbing the metro police service into the South African Police Service (Saps) will weaken crime fighting.
Government and Parliament is considering legislation that would bring metro police departments under the control of national police management.
But Plato has bemoaned the proposed move.
"With what's happening with on the Cape Flats specifically - the drugs scourge and the gangs scourge is running away with us out of proportion, as a result of the fact that there's no special entity dealing with the matter. The specialised brainpower of Saps is now scattered."
