CAPE TOWN - A newborn baby who was allegedly stabbed by his mother in Macassar at the weekend, is in a stable condition.

The little boy was stabbed in the neck over the weekend.

The Western Cape Social Development Department says it is shocked by the stabbing incident.

MEC Albert Fritz says it believed the woman attacked her baby during an argument with her boyfriend.

"As the department we are very worried because many times when there's a dispute between a mother and father ... in this instance a two-day-old baby was stabbed in the neck. The father accused the mother and said the child wasn't his."
