JOHANNESBURG - Apple will be introducing some new additions to its collection of emojis and says its working closely with the Unicode Consortium to ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere.

More gender options will be made available, including new female athletes and professionals, a new rainbow flag and more family options.

Part of the change will see a handgun emoji replaced with a water pistol.

The move has been linked to US concerns over gun violence in the country.

More than one hundred new and redesigned emoji characters will be available to iPhone and iPad users with the iOS 10.
