'The ANC has done all it can to win the hearts of potential voters'

Gwede Mantashe says it’s been to all corners of the country engaging South Africans.

JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe says the party has done all it can to win the hearts of South Africans and will now wait for Wednesday to see if this translates into votes.

Mantashe addressed the media at Luthuli House on the party's state of readiness for the polls.

The ANC says it's been to all corners of the country engaging South Africans.

It says it's humbled by the support it received at its Siyanqoba Rally where the party filled two stadiums at the weekend and endorsements by party's stalwarts and celebrities.

Mantashe says all that support will be evident at the polls.

"We must dignify the notion that the ANC has already won and every vote counts and every one of us must be counted."

The Secretary General says like all other elections; it takes this one seriously.

CONFIDENCE

At the same time, the ANC's campaign head, Nomvula Mokonyane, says she's confident her party has put in enough work to retain power in Mogale City.

Mokonyane arrived at the Noordheuwel Country Club this afternoon to cast her special vote for this year's local government elections.

Minister Mokonyane was cheerful and in high spirits as she cast her vote at the club.

She says voting is always an emotional moment for her.

"Every time you do go through this, you also do it on behalf of those who were selfless for years to make us have this right to vote."

Outside the voting station, the ANC and DA set up tables adorned with party emblems.

The councillor candidates for both parties were also there greeting voters as they trickle in to cast their ballots.
