Chiefs handed tough opening fixture

Reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns won’t be in action on the opening night due to CAF competition.

JOHANNESBURG - The PSL has released the full fixture schedule on today with the first matches of the season kicking off on 23 August.

The start of the season has been delayed because of the Olympics, the national Under 23 side is competing in Rio.

With more than half of the clubs being represented in Owen da Gama's squad, the league was forced to be put on hold.

Reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns won't be in action on the opening night because they're due to play in the CAF Champions League in the same window.

With upcoming MTN8 fixtures and the international window, Pitso Mosimane's men will only start their title defense on 14 September when they play Maritzburg United away.

Match Day 1 will see:

Bidvest Wits vs Kaizer Chiefs

Baroka FC vs Ajax Cape Town

Cape Town City vs Polokwane City

Chippa Utd vs Free State Stars

The MTN8 will start on the weekend of 27 August, the Telkom Knockout kicks off on 19 October, meanwhile, the final cup competition of the season, the Nedbank Cup, is set to begin on 8 March 2017.
