Security in place as final elections rallies get underway - Phahlane
Police and other security have been deployed to ensure the rallies go ahead smoothly.
JOHANNESBURG - Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane has told Eyewitness News that all their plans are in place to manage the three main political rallies this weekend just days before millions of South Africans go to the polls.
The Democratic Alliance is hosting its rally today while the African National Congress and the Economic Freedom Fighters have planned theirs for tomorrow.
Lieutenant General Phahlane says everything is place to ensure the major rallies scheduled for this weekend go ahead smoothly.
"We are going to deal with those rallies adequately. Our planning is in place. Our deployment is in place, and I've got no doubt that we would have delivered a safe one over the weekend."
Security company Signal Risk's Ryan Cummings says political parties should abide by the Independent Electoral Commission's request for everyone to respect the elections process.
"And obviously ensure that the various constituents are not inflaming already heightened political tensions."
Political leaders have been urged not to use inflammatory language, which may fuel political tension.
