Police investigate torching of classrooms in NW
Community members protested, allegedly over the nomination of a ward councillor candidate.
JOHANNESBURG - North West police are investigating a case of arson after seven classrooms were set alight in Mareetsane village near Mahikeng.
On Thursday night, an unidentified group of people torched parts of the Setilo Secondary School.
Officials say there was also an attempt to burn a community hall in the area.
Earlier this week, community members embarked on a protest allegedly over the nomination of a ward councillor candidate.
But the police's Sabata Mokgwabone says it's not yet clear if the cases of arson are linked to election issues.
"We cannot definitely say that the incident happened as a result of the election or that they are election related. What we can confirm is that some members of the community actually burned down seven classrooms, and nobody has been arrested in that particular case."
