JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has welcomed the Independent Electoral Committee's (IEC) dismissal of a complaint against Johannesburg Mayor Park Tau after the Democratic Alliance ( DA) had accused him of misusing his power and tax payers' money for excessive advertising campaigns.

The DA had complained to the commission, saying Tau and the city were using their position in the metro to promote the ANC ahead of next week's local government elections.

But the IEC has ruled against the opposition, saying the advert which aired in March, does not constitute abuse of power or contravene the Electoral Code of Conduct.

The ANC's Nkenke Kekana says the complaint was a desperate attempt to divert attention from the city's good work.

"The Democratic Alliance doesn't have a strong campaign in the City of Johannesburg; they are desperate and will attack everything good that the ANC has been doing. This is yet another example of a desperate party."
