In an explosive resignation letter to the DA, Standers told the party's Western Cape leadership he had enough of racial practices within the George caucus.
He also accused it of turning a blind eye to corruption, relating to the alleged theft of electricity by a DA councillor.
Standers today endorsed the ANC's mayoral candidate, Piet van der Hoven, as the best person to lead the municipality over the next five years.
Van der Hoven says he's honoured by the vote of confidence.
"He endorsed me because he is aware and knows exactly what happened in council [over] the last five to six years. The ANC fought against corruption, against racism, maladministration and interference in the administration of the municipality."
Yesterday, the DA's Jaco Londt said he believed Standers could possibly join the ANC.
"We, in the DA, expect him to join the ANC where like-minded individuals like Jacob Zuma and Marius Fransman will welcome him to the fold."
