JOHANNESBURG - The funeral service for racing car driver Gugu Zulu is taking place at the Rhema Church in Randburg this morning.

Zulu died last week Monday while attempting to summit Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the Trek4Mandela initiative which raises money for girls in disadvantaged communities.

After experiencing mild flu-like symptoms during the climb, the 38-year-old's condition worsened and he had difficulty breathing.

He was taken down the mountain and passed away before reaching a hospital. Zulu's body was repatriated last Thursday.

On Tuesday, a memorial service was held for Zulu at the Kyalami race track where his wife Letshego said she would continue flying the South African flag high because that's what her late husband would have wanted.

Hundreds of people have gathered at Rhema to pay their respects.
