CAPE TOWN - Finance Minister and senior African National Congress official Pravin Gordhan has reiterated that a new South African Airways (SAA) board is the only way to bring about positive change at the national carrier.

Gordhan made the remarks on the sidelines of a campaign event at the University of Cape Town last night.

The finance minister declined to give exact details on his plans for SAA, only saying a decisive turnaround at the airline is needed.

When pressed over a potential board reshuffle, the minister wouldn't elaborate.

"I don't have any further answers to that question. We need to get a new board, a new management team and we will get a turnaround in time."

On previous occasions, Gordhan has indicated credible people need to be appointed to take the cash-strapped airline forward.

The Democratic Alliance has called for the national carrier to be placed under business rescue.
