UCT academics in potential malaria treatment breakthrough

Academics have identified a molecule that could help improve the treatment & prevention of malaria.

CAPE TOWN - Academics at the University of Cape Town have identified a molecule that could help in improving the treatment and prevention of malaria.

Researchers at the institution's Drug Discovery and Development Centre say the molecule has the potential to relieve symptoms related to the disease.

If successful, it will also kill the malaria parasite.

The university's Kelly Chibale says, "What it offers is really three things. One is mega control, second is blocking transmission and third is protection, of course, if it makes it all the way to the market."

In 201, the centre also discovered a similar molecule that is currently in clinical development.
