CAPE TOWN - Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says South Africans should not allow "certain individuals to hijack the economy".

Gordhan today engaged University of Cape Town students on the African National Congress's campaign trail ahead of the local government elections next week.

In a frank discussion, Gordhan stressed the importance of creating an inclusive growth environment within the South African landscape.

Gordhan conceded the mining sector will not play an integral part in the economy going forward.

He says government should start tapping into alternatives like agriculture and the oceans economy.

Gordhan also focussed on the importance of South Africans being less reliant on the state.
