JOHANNESBURG - The latest Statistics South Africa survey, of capital expenditure by the public sector, shows the biggest spending goes towards service delivery projects.

Statistician General Pali Lehohla released the report at a briefing in Pretoria today.

The study considers spending by government departments, municipalities and state-owned enterprises, on items such as new construction, refurbishments and maintenance.

The report found that capex spending increased by R17 billion to R272 billion in the 2015 financial year.

Lehohla says public institutions are the biggest spenders.

"We have presented what's been spent by the public sector over the last five years and what we've seen here is R1,1 trillion and we see with public institutions such as Eskom, Transnet and those being the biggest spenders (sic)."

He says this spending goes towards service delivery projects which is reflected in the community survey.

"Yes, we are seeing houses, we are seeing water and electricity increasing."
