JOHANNESBURG - The EThekwini municipality says its Disaster Management Centre has been receiving numerous reports of people stranded and affected by floods in various places in KwaZulu-Natal.

Reports say five bodies have been found in and around Durban.

The municipality is still trying to assess how many people have been affected.

EThekwini's Tozi Mthethwa says residents living in low lying areas must take extra care due to the flooding.

"In supporting the elderly, young children and babies so that they can be comfortable during this period."

However, Mthethwa says despite the floods, the rain has assisted with the drought, which has affected the country since last year.

"We are hard hit by the drought and we need every drop of rain that we can get."

The municipality is handing out food parcels and clothing to assist affected residents.
