NFP takes IEC to court over exclusion from municipal elections
The NFP failed to pay the required fees by the deadline and was disqualified.
Due to an internal party bungle, the NFP failed to pay the required fees by the deadline and was disqualified.
It will only be allowed to contest one municipality in its stronghold of KwaZulu-Natal.
The NFP's case was dismissed by the Electoral Court earlier this month, but the party is not giving up.
NFP spokesperson Sabelo Sigudu said, "The Electoral Court dismissed our appeal due to evidence and we have made another appeal as the NFP."
IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela says the Electoral Court will determine whether the NFP can contest in more than one municipality on 3 August.
"Our job as the IEC is to make sure that when the rules are made, everyone plays according to the rules so that we have a levelling of the playfield."
The NFP joined forces with the African National Congress to form coalitions to control hung councils in the 2011 elections.
