JMPD on alert amid protest in Soweto

Residents are calling for their ward councillor to step down in Dlamini, Soweto.

JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) says they are monitoring a tense situation in Dlamini, Soweto, where a protest erupted this morning.

Residents are calling for their ward councillor to step down.

Earlier, they blockaded the main road with rocks and burning tyres, but officers say the situation is now calm.

No injuries have been reported.

The JMPD's Edna Mamonyane says: "Earlier this morning at around 5am we got a call of a protest of Dlamini 1. The police [JMPD] and Saps were on scene. At this stage the situation is calm, there is no violence and we will remain in the area."
