20 arrested for drunk driving in WC over weekend

CAPE TOWN - At least 20 motorists have been taken into custody across the Western Cape this weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Traffic officers put up numerous roadblocks in the province as part of the department's ongoing safety campaign.

One of the drunk drivers had also been involved in a collision that left one person dead.

On Saturday, four people had been arrested for drunk driving. Western Cape Traffic Service's Jaques Mostert pleaded with motorists not to mix alcohol and road use.

He also made a special appeal to those who went to watch the rugby game in Newlands to be responsible.

But by yesterday morning, another sixteen people were behind bars for driving under the influence.

Mostert says one of the offenders was caught following a fatal collision.

"On the N1 near Brackenfell, the driver of one vehicle died on the scene and the driver of the other vehicle was arrested for drunk driving."
