[LISTEN] SABC crowdfunding initiative raises R360,000 & counting

Sanef's Adriaan Basson, who started the initiative, says he is surprised by the support that the public has shown over the last two days.

CAPE TOWN - Sanef media freedom chairperson and News24 editor, Adriaan Basson, says he is surprised by the immense support that a group of SABC journalists have received through a crowd funding initiative.

Hundreds of thousands of rands have been raised for the eight journalists axed by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) this week.

Basson spoke to Cape Talk's Kieno Kammies on the breakfast show this morning.

Sharing his reasons for creating the fund, Basson said: "They've got kids, some of them are bread winners, some of them are single parents so I decided, let's just ask my Facebook friends if they would be willing to donate some kind of money to a crowdsource fund to help these guys pay their bills. And I've been blown away by the reaction."

At least R360,000 has been donated in less than two days.
