Gauteng MEC promises 500k job opportunities for Kliptown youth
MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza says her department has placed over 40,000 women in jobs since 2014.
JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Social Development says it aims to employ more than half a million young people in Kliptown, in Soweto by 2019.
It says its already registered more than 250, 000 young people and placed close to 60, 000 others on skills development training at the 'Gauteng Tshepo 500 000' job centre.
Gauteng MEC of Social Development Nandi Mayathula-Khoza says they also encourages young women living on social grants to approach the centre.
"Since 2014, we have been able to place young women into employment and business - this is about 4, 000 [of them]."
She says government is working with the private sector to create jobs.
"Government working [alone] can never achieve. Job creation is not particularly a job for government."
The department says while 75 job centres already exist, there are plans to build another 25.
