JOHANNESBURG - Funeral arrangements for the late Gugu Zulu are being finalised.

The racing car driver died while trying to summit Mount Kilimanjaro with his wife and the Trek4Mandela team earlier this week.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation says it is working with Tanzanian officials to ensure that Zulu's body can return to South Africa today but admits that it may not be possible to achieve.

Zulu's family says plans for his funeral are proceeding smoothly and they will announce the date soon.

His uncle, Tsidiso Motloelwa, says it's been a tough few days but they've received much strength and support from the public.

Motloelwa says a few details need to be finalised but the funeral arrangements are being planned.

"We are coordinating the plans well. From arrival to burial, we already have the skeleton of our plans."

Motloelwa says all will be welcome to attend the funeral adding that the family appreciates all the support from the public.

"Gugu is not ours only, he belongs to the total community of South Africa."

Friends have created a trust for the motoring enthusiast's family in honour of the contribution he made in the lives of disadvantaged children.
