CAPE TOWN - The Traditional Affairs department has shut down 11 unregistered initiation schools in the Eastern Cape.
Eleven men have also been arrested for performing circumcisions illegally.
The province recorded the highest number of initiation-related deaths this year after 18 boys died from, among other things, botched circumcisions.
Eastern Cape Traditional Affairs spokesperson Mamnkeli Ngam says, "At the end of this month we'll assemble to look at the challenges and plot the way forward in as far as the issue of safe initiation is concerned. We also want to ensure that there's zero death during the summer initiations."
