Political parties spend big on 2016 municipal election campaigns
The ANC, EFF & DA have conceded they’ve spent more money in recent campaigns than ever before.
JOHANNESBURG - With the local government elections fast approaching, the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance(DA) say they have spent more money on these elections than ever before.
With less than 16 days to go before the polls, political parties have entered their final phases of campaigning and are all hoping for victory on 3 August.
Political parties agree that the upcoming local government elections will be hotly contested.
EFF elections spokesperson Veronica Mente says their budget for campaigns runs into millions.
"It's millions already. Posters are very expensive and banners. You have seen banners in all the metros."
The DA's Phumzile van Damme says they have left no cent unspent on spreading their message for change.
"We are taking this election, like every other election, very seriously. But this one is specifically the most important election since 1994."
The ANC's head of elections and campaigns, Nomvula Mokonyane, says their focus has been on training.
"We really spent more on training than before."
While the parties say they have been to all corners of the country campaigning, their focus has been largely on the Tshwane, Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela Bay metros.
