CAPE TOWN - Cape Town traffic officials have confirmed that 302 vehicles linked to e-hailing car service Uber have been impounded.

The cars were impounded between January and June this year.

The figure is much higher than the 255 cars impounded between January and November last year.

Cape Town traffic spokesperson Richard Coleman says this is due to an increase in the number of Uber partner drivers on the road without valid operating licences.

Uber's growth in popularity has put in conflict with the metered taxi industry.

Last week, angry cab drivers demonstrated outside the Western Cape legislature, threatening to take legal action against the City of Cape Town for allowing Uber to operate in Cape Town.
