14 shortlisted for new Public Protector post
They include Judge Siraj Desai, Willie Hofmeyr and former deputy public protector Mamiki Shai.
CAPE TOWN - Members of Parliament (MP) have shortlisted 14 people to interview for the position of Public Protector.
They include Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai, Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Willie Hofmyer and former Deputy Public Protector Mamiki Goodman (nee Shai).
Outgoing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela leaves office at the end of October.
A special parliamentary committee tasked with finding her successor pored over the CVs of 56 candidates today before emerging with a shortlist.
African National Congress (ANC) MP Bongani Bongo chose Judge Desai and Sharise Weiner as his preferred candidates.
Democratic Alliance MP James Selfe objected to Desai's nomination, but it didn't stand.
"He has participated in a highly controversial commission on inquiry, and he has handed down highly political judgments."
Goodman also received a nod from the ANC.
During her tumultuous tenure at the public protector's office, she clashed with her boss, Madonsela.
She had accused Madonsela of protecting an employee after he allegedly forged Goodman's signature in order to pay himself a performance bonus.
