JOHANNESBURG - Four suspects will appear in courts in Johannesburg and Kagiso today on terrorism-related charges after being arrested at the weekend.

The Hawks raided two houses - one in Newclare and another in Azaadville - where they confiscated a number of items including computers and cellphones.

The four suspects had attempted to travel to Syria but it hasn't been officially disclosed whether they were intending to join Isis.

The Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi said the suspects had been under police surveillance for a year now.

"They were part of a project we started last year after we received information that they were part of a terrorist cell in our country."

Officials said that the men had previously tried to leave the country for Syria but were prevented by officials from embarking.

A few weeks ago, malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town promised to increase security following a security alert by the US embassy.
