CAPE TOWN - An Uber driver is recovering in hospital after he was attacked, allegedly by a group of clients at the weekend in Cape Town.

It is understood that three men instructed the driver to stop near their arranged drop-off point in Manenberg when the incident occurred.

In a statement, Uber confirmed that one of its drivers was in a stable condition in hospital following Saturday's attack.

Uber Spokesperson Samantha Allenberg said, "Our thoughts are with the driver and we are relieved to hear his condition is currently stable. At this stage, it is not clear what caused this incident but we will support the authorities in their investigation however we can."

The three suspects also allegedly torched the Uber driver's car.

The cab hailing service's management said that it would assist authorities in their investigation.

Cape Town Police has not yet confirmed whether charges of assault and arson had been laid.
