It’s understood the vehicle crashed into another truck shortly before midday.
JOHANNESBURG - A truck driver has been killed after a petrol tanker burst into flames near the Mabopane Highway.
It's understood the vehicle crashed into another truck shortly before midday.
Netcare 911's Athlenda Mathe says the N4 towards Brits has been closed until further notice.
"Apparently the truck driver was found lying next to the truck, burnt beyond recognition. He was declared dead on the scene by a Netcare 911 paramedic."
Eyewitness Werner Herselman says he heard several loud explosions.
"He was trapped inside that fire, which was tremendous. I was standing on the other side of the highway and I couldn't even get close - that's how immense the heat was."
MOTORISTS URGED TO AVOID N4
Traffic officials are advising motorists to avoid a section of the N4 Mabopane highway, following the deadly truck accident.
Emergency teams are working to clear the affected area, where the truck burst into flames earlier.
The other driver is in a serious but stable condition.
Gauteng traffic spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo says, "Gauteng Traffic Police officers and the South African Police Service are at the scene and they are diverting [traffic] onto the R80. I cannot tell which [other] routes they are going to use, but they are controlling traffic."
