India PM Modi to visit SA as part of African tour

Modi is expected to visit Johannesburg, Durban and Pietermaritzburg while in SA.

PRETORIA - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started his four-nation safari in Mozambique, tweeting about his arrival in Portuguese.

He said that his tour would strengthen bilateral bonds between the two countries.

The Indian leader will meet President Felipe Nyusi and then move on to South Africa this evening. He will also visit Tanzania and Kenya.

Modi is aiming to enhance ties between India and the African continent, particularly in the economic sphere.

His tour will also focus on deepening cooperation in areas of hydrocarbons, maritime security, trade and investment, agriculture and food.

This is his first visit to the African mainland as India's leader.

He is expected to visit Johannesburg, Durban and Pietermaritzburg while in South Africa.
