JOHANNESBURG - The owners of the Atlantic Charter and Tours bus that overturned in Johannesburg, injuring dozens of people, says it cannot comment at this stage on claims that the bus driver fled the scene.

It is understood that the bus, which was traveling to Cape Town, collided with another vehicle on the M1 south near the Crown interchange last night.

At least 40 people were rushed to hospital.

Netcare 911's Athlenda Mathe said: "There were no fatalities and everyone sustained moderate to minor injuries, no one was serious injured."

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, said that the driver fled the scene soon after the accident.

"The driver ran away, so the cause of the accident will be investigated. Through that investigation, we will establish who was driving the bus, so they can be held liable if they were reckless."
