JOHANNESBURG - Twitter users have had a field day on the social platform after Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane's cellphone number was made public earlier this afternoon.

The big surprise though, isn't the fact that countless South Africans are calling him, texting him and even sending him WhatsApp messages; the biggest shock is the fact that the last four digits of his number are 1652.

This, in South African history, is the year Jan van Riebeeck hit local shores.

His arrival marked the beginning of permanent European settlement in the Cape region and overtaking the Khoisan land.

Now, humourous Tweeps have taken it upon themselves to question the link between van Riebeeck's methods of land ownership with the land policies of the DA.

Maimane is also being bombarded with calls and text messages on numerous other issues from 'concerned' citizens.
