JOHANNESBURG - Dr Albertina Luthuli says the challenge of apartheid has been difficult on black people and strong and selfless leadership is needed to take the country forward.

She says the Constitution should be like the "Bible" of values for every South African, as the country prepares to celebrate Nelson Mandela month.

Luthuli says the African National Congress (ANC) leadership should learn from its mistakes, and as a developmental state, she still remains optimistic about the future of South Africa.

She has also reflected on Madiba's selfless leadership, and says those leading today should be willing to listen to the will of the people.

"In those days you concentrated on the job of liberating yourself from an oppressive government; but then it doesn't matter what the challenge is, a leader that has the right values and qualities to be a leader, the challenge doesn't matter what the challenge is. There will always be a challenge."
