Electoral Court to hear NFP claim against IEC on Friday
The NFP admitted paying late, saying its national treasurer mixed up the dates.
JOHANNESBURG - The National Freedom Party (NFP) says the Electoral Court will hear its claim against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Friday after it was barred from the 3 August local government elections.
The IEC says it has no choice in the case because the NFP failed to pay the necessary fees on time to contest the elections.
The NFP admitted paying late, saying its national treasurer mixed up the dates on which the money had to be paid.
NFP's Secretary General Nhlanhla Khubisa says, "It was an administrative error that we admit. That's why, after we observed the area, the national chairperson of our party Comrade Maliyakhe Shelembe and myself had to go to the IEC."
The party says while it did fail to make its payment to on time, it should still be able to contest the August polls.
The NFP's case against the electoral commission will be heard on Friday, after the commission said it could simply not allow the party to take part in the elections.
It's blamed an administrative error as its national treasurer misread the date on which the payment was due.
Party's secretary general Khubisa says the treasurer will be held responsible.
