JOHANNESBURG - The South African Revenue Service (Sars) will launch the opening of the 2016 tax season this week by starting a walking for tax initiative.

The campaign will see Sars employs across the country conducting walkabouts to hand out information packages on the tax season.

Employees will be walking to various areas to engage with members of the public, to help simplify the process of filing tax returns.

Last year, more than four million individuals filed their annual tax returns.

The Revenue Service says it paid out almost R2 billion in refunds.

During the walkabouts, which will be conducted until November, members of the public will receive information on the tax return process, including whether or not they are required to file.
