CAPE TOWN - Ten people have been arrested in connection with an international abalone syndicate, operating in the Eastern Cape.

The Hawks today intercepted the R500-million operation, following months of surveillance.

During seven raids this morning, police also confiscated items believed to part of an abalone processing facility.

The Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi says, "This syndicate was responsible for smuggling and trafficking of abalone in and out of the country. It's an international syndicate that has got links to China as well.

"Ten suspects have been arrested - there's one that's still outstanding but we hope that particular person would be handing themselves over to us."
