HARARE - Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has revealed that he has colon cancer and will begin chemotherapy this week.

Without mentioning President Robert Mugabe, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader said it was his firm belief that the health of politicians shouldn't be the subject of speculation.

Already comparisons are being drawn with Tsvangirai's brave disclosure of his cancer and the secrecy that surrounds Mugabe's state of health.

This statement from the MDC leader confirms rumours that have been growing since Tsvangirai travelled to South Africa for surgery last month.

Tsvangirai says the cancer was found in May and that he underwent a successful operation.

Chemotherapy is due to begin this week.

The MDC has posted pictures of Tsvangirai and his wife Elizabeth on Facebook: it's not clear if the photos were taken inside a clinic.
