CAPE TOWN - A teenage boy who survived being struck by a train at a level crossing between Retreat and Steenberg is in a stable condition in hospital.

Thirteen-year-old Jason Carelse is being treated at the Groote Schuur Hospital after he sustained serious head injuries. His leg has also been amputated.

His 16-year-old friend Charles Gates died after he was struck by the train at the White Road level crossing earlier this week.

The boys allegedly didn't see the oncoming train when they crossed the train tracks.

The Western Cape Health Department's Mark van der Heever says, "The patient is in a stable condition and has been scheduled for further surgical procedures to be carried out tomorrow."

Yesterday investigators said they would scrutinise CCTV footage from cameras installed at the level crossing following the accident.
