CAPE TOWN - Authorities are keeping a close eye on a protest over electricity near Strawberry Farm between Stellenbosch and Kuils River.

At least 50 protesters have barricaded Vlaeberg Road with burning tyres and rocks since earlier this evening.

Police and traffic officials are expected to remain in the area overnight.

Residents are protesting over an apparent lack of electricity supply to the area outside Stellenbosch.

The road remains closed and it's unclear when it will be reopened to traffic.

While demonstrators have been blocking the roads with burning tyres, there's been no other damage to property in the area.

Crews are on high alert and are expected to conduct patrols throughout the night.
