CAPE TOWN - Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a fatal train incident in Steenberg.

Sixteen-year-old Charles Gates died when he was struck by an oncoming train earlier today.

His 15-year-old friend who was with him, is in a critical condition in hospital.

Forensic investigators are combing the area around the White Road level crossing after the fatal train incident earlier this afternoon.

Gates died after he was knocked down, reportedly while trying to escape an approaching train.

His mother Margaret Gates, still visibly distraught, says she was at work when neighbours notified her of the tragedy.

Another teenager has been hospitalised after he was also struck by the train.

Earlier, a small crowd had gathered at the level crossing where the body of a teenage boy lay covered under a white sheet, with his red BMX bike next to him.

The smashed bicycle is a shocking remnant of the tragedy that played out here earlier today.

Details of the incident remain scant but investigators say they will analyse footage from CCTV cameras installed at the levelling crossing two years ago.

Meanwhile, Metrorail has advised commuters of intermittent delays on the Southern line due to the incident.
