JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress(ANC) has officially announced Thoko Didiza as its Tshwane mayoral candidate.

The announcement was made by the party's Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte.

The ANC has also thanked current mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa for his contribution.

Duarte says the party is confident in the abilities of Didiza, a former Public Works minister.

"The intervention was unanimously accepted and comrade Thoko Didiza is thus the ANC mayoral candidate for the city."

Duarte has also condemned the violence that erupted last night between rival ANC groups that led to a member being shot and killed.

"We send our condolences to the family of our comrade who passed away. His name will not be made public by us until we are sure that his next of kin have been properly notified."

The party says Ramokgopa and deputy regional chairperson Mapiti Matsena will continue to lead the region and most importantly unite the organisation on the ground.

The ANC has denied imposing Didiza as mayoral candidate in Tshwane, saying this was a calculated move.

Duarte says Didiza was not just parachuted to Tshwane, and her record speaks for itself.

She has called on ANC members to respect the decision to appoint Didiza as it was taken by the party's highest decision making body.

Duarte says all members must now focus on one thing, which is to campaign and ensure an overwhelming victory for the party, come elections.

The local government elections will take place on 3 August.
