ANC announces its mayoral candidates for 2016 municipal elections
ANC's Gwede Mantashe announced the mayoral candidates alongside party spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.
The ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) held an emergency meeting yesterday to discuss its mayoral candidates for metropolitan municipalities and what it has identified as strategic municipalities, being areas it will be fiercely contesting.
ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe announced the mayoral candidates alongside party spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.
Mantashe said there was a lot of heated debate during the special NEC meeting to select candidates before agreeing on the final list.
"Nelson Mandela Bay, Danny Jordaan. The City of Cape Town our mayoral candidate is going to be Xolani Notashe. In Ekurhuleni our candidate is Mzwandile Masina. In the City of Johannesburg our mayoral candidate comrade Parks Tau is our mayoral candidate."
There had been earlier claims that Tau was not going to be nominated to the post and that the party was going to choose Connie Bapela to become the ANC's official candidate.
MANTASHE CALLS ON STRATEGIC CENTRES
The ANC says it will fiercely contest the da-lead Midvaal municipality in the upcoming local government elections but has not identified the region as part of its strategic municipalities.
Mantashe has called strategic centers, which he said the party will be focusing on during election campaigning.
He said the ANC will definitely campaign in Midvaal to take back the municipality from the opposition.
Midvaal is important for us because we must contest it seriously. Our mayoral candidate there is Tefo Molakeng."
