Nelson Mandela Bay aware of Linda Mti's criminal record
The municipality says the drunk driving conviction is not as serious as other crimes like murder.
CAPE TOWN - The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro says it's aware that it's new head of safety and security Linda Mti has a criminal record.
Mti was convicted of drunk driving in 2008. He was also implicated in fraud and corruption worth more than R1.5 billion following a decade-long probe by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay City Manager Johann Mettler says Mti's 2008 drunk driving conviction is not as serious as other crimes like murder.
Mettler has also dismissed the SIU report, which found Mti benefited financially through alleged corrupt dealings with Bosasa Operations during his time as National Correctional Services Commissioner between 2004 and 2005.
"There is no institution in this country that can deny somebody employment purely on the basis that there is an investigation."
The municipality says Mti has not been afforded his day in court on that matter.
