[LISTEN] WC Traffic given green-light to bring back breathalyser test
CapeTalk’s John Maytham interviews Transport MEC Donald Grant about the reintroduction of the Dräger breathalyser test in the Western Cape.
CAPE TOWN - Transport MEC Donald Grant says his department is delighted to be given the go ahead to reintroduce the Dräger breathalyser test in the Western Cape.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed the test can be reintroduced in August.
A court ruling in 2011 led to the Dräger breathalyser being withdrawn from use, because of problems around how the device was used.
A task team was subsequently set up to fix the issues.
Grant says a lot of work has gone into improving the device.
"It is properly researched and I want to ask all the listeners out there, please this is not an instrument of terror, it is a deterrent to ensure that drivers are responsible when drivers get behind the wheel."
