UEFA hand Russia a ‘suspended disqualification’

Russian and English fans clashed over the weekend in Marseille as well as during the football match.

CAPE TOWN - UEFA has moved to repel the ongoing fan violence by handing Russia a "suspended disqualification" from the European Championships.

UEFA are weary of the presence of a number of Russian fans who are considered "hyper violent and hyper rapid" as described by French authorities.

Russian and English fans clashed over the weekend in Marseille as well as during the football match between the two nations on Saturday in the city.

A suspended disqualification now means that the team will be booted out of Europe's largest international football competition if incidents like in Marseille continue to occur.

A statement by UEFA read, "Charges relating to crowd disturbances, use of fireworks and racist behaviour had been brought against the [Russian Football Union]."

It said the ethics committee imposed a fine of €150,000 and a suspended disqualification of the Russian national team until the end of the tournament.

The UEFA executive committee still have the power punish further if needed.

"Such suspension will be lifted if incidents of a similar nature (crowd disturbances) happen inside the stadium at any of the remaining matches of the Russian team during the tournament."

It was also reported that French authorities stopped a group of 50 alleged Russian Ultras, they were on their way to Lille where more violence was expected to take place with English fans.

Back in Russia, The Kremlin had urged Russian fans in France not to react to any "provocations" and called on Russian sporting officials to use the position to keep fans in check during the tournament.
