JOHANNESBURG - Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has welcomed the arrests of six suspects linked to last week's deadly violence at Northam Platinum that left a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and an Association of Metalworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) member killed.

Clashes broke out between NUM and rival Amcu members last week during which an Amcu member was stabbed to death with an assagai.

It's believed this was triggered by the murder of an NUM member a day earlier.

Zwane met with mine management and the majority union the NUM today and says police have made progress.

"Some arrests have been made and we have given the report that there are leads that will lead to more arrests."
