Gauteng govt, taxi leaders formulate 8-point plan for future engagements

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's government together with leaders in the taxi industry have formulated an 8-point plan that will be used in future engagements between the two parties.
This month the Departments of Community Safety and Transport will host a provincial taxi summit to address challenges facing the industry.
Gauteng provincial government says it plans to take a constructive approach to addressing issues in the taxi industry by holding a provincial summit.
The gathering which will take place next week, will address matters of regulation and the economic empowerment, of the taxi industry.
On Friday, provincial leaders met with leaders of taxi associations to formulate the plan that covers a variety of challenges.
Some of the areas that will be addressed include the licensing of vehicles, the roadworthiness of taxis and high levels of conflict and violence within the industry.
The two-day Taxi Indaba will start as a public meeting followed by an intensive workshop with association leaders.
