IEC hopeful its online special votes will encourage more people to vote
Polling stations will open on 1 and 2 August for those who are pregnant, ill or have other obligations.
JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it believes allowing South Africans to register for special votes online and via SMS will encourage more people to participate in this year's municipal elections.
Yesterday, the commission formally opened registrations for the process which caters to those who aren't able to be at voting stations on 3 August.
Polling stations will open on 1 and 2 August for those who are pregnant, ill or have to attend to other obligations on the official Election Day.
Home visits will also be available for those who are hospitalised and sick.
The IEC's Granville Abrahams said, "Since we are making it easier for a visit to the station either the 1st of the 2nd of August or alternatively to be visited at home. If you qualify we expect that we will have more people use this opportunity."
