Northam Platinum: Amcu lashes out at Zwane over 'secret' meeting
Joseph Mathunjwa says SA should remember that similar secret talks resulted in the Marikina massacre.
JOHANNESBURG - The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has lashed out at Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane, for excluding the union from a meeting on tensions at Northam Platinum.
Zwane met with mine management, police as well as the majority union at Northern Platinum, the National Union for Mineworkers(NUM) to discuss this week's clashes that have claimed the lives of two miners in Limpopo.
Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa says his union was not invited to yesterday's meeting with the mineral resources minister.
He says the country should remember that similar secret talks resulted in 34 miners being killed in Marikina in 2012.
"We are part of the mine, so why are we set aside? Everyone must be on board."
But Minister Zwane is adamant having leaders from both Amcu and the NUM at the same meeting would not have been a good idea.
"It was not going to be in the [interest] of all of us, to have combined Amcu members and members and the NUM workers."
He says a meeting with Amcu leaders is on the cards.
