JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says it welcomes today's planned visit by Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane to Northam Platinum's Zondereinde Mine.

Two people have been killed there in the past week.

In the most recent incident, a worker was stabbed during a clash between members of the NUM and rival union the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).

The NUM says its workers will only return to work when the company assures them that it's safe to do so.

"We appreciate his visit and hope that it will assure workers that it is safe to return to work."

NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu says six NUM members have been killed since last year and the union believes it's being attacked because Northam is its biggest branch in the platinum sector.
