NUM: No work until workers’ safety is guaranteed
Northam Platinum mine suspended operations after the deaths of two miners in clashes between unions.
JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says its members will only resume work at Northam Platinum's Zondereinde mine, once it' safe for workers.
Northam Platinum suspended production at the mine on Monday, after a worker was fatally stabbed during a clash between members of the NUM and rival association, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).
Yesterday, the company urged workers to return to their posts, but the NUM's David Sipunzi says they won't comply.
"If they say it is safe for our workers to go there, we will go back to work. We are not guaranteed as to whether it is safe now. We have told the employers that they should guarantee the safety of our members."
Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane is expected to visit the mine tomorrow.
